It's not necessary you can try the other models too If you are not so confident with your skills. As far as I know there are the other type of gliders too, but their performance is limited.I would think the DLG is a good step however build is a bit more involved, but with most DLG's you will need to get used to putting them together.I have had a few goes on DLG's and it flies nicely and I have launched it into the ground after slipping, they are on the tougher side.

I have had a DL50 for some time now. On my 2nd set of Wings as it has been launched that many times, the original set fell to bits.
An excellent start plane for DLG and cheap.
