Metal gear servo dilemma

Postby flying doc » Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:55 am

Folks,

I'm really confused about buying a few metal gear servos for a 60 size turbo raven and a few of my SPADs. Some of the metal gears ones are as cheap as the standard nylon gear servos. I've seen these 2 on the net and would like your opinions for these and ur suggestions for some others.

I'm not a fan of the Towerpro metal-geared servos.

The 946 has a *very* marginal amplifier that *will* fail if you stall the servo for more than a fraction of a second. During testing I blew two of these amps under conditions that most other servos would have handled with ease.

One servo that has looked okay is the Corona digital metal-geared one but I have had one where the gears were not pressed together properly so it failed in flight (only on throttle fortunately).

When it comes to servos the old adage remains true: you pretty much get what you pay for.

Then which ones do u suggest? I would need to put them on a 60 size Turbo raven with an ASP 91 engine and would like to do some 3 D flying. Price though is a constraint and Nylon gear servos won't so as i've completely stripped a couple of Futaba 3003's on the elevator.
Waiting for ur suggestions

I would like to add to Bruce's spot-on MG995 review that the 995 servos I own have a lot of play in their gear. I would not want to fly anything with them.
As I understand, the 996 is very similar to the 995 and so I would be sceptical for them, too.

In my RC cars, I have had good experience with Bluebird servos. Good value for money. I used them in rock crawlers, sometimes under water and no problems.

item#: XQ-S4020D (

Bruce, have you tested Henge's servos like the 933 and 922 for the 9-12g servo applications?

I have some Henge servos here and am looking at them now. So far they seem pretty good.

I was having a cursory look at the DG-933MG and it seemed pretty good compared with HS-65HB/MG. Considering the market for 9/12g servos, you might want to throw some in for testing in your next HK order. ;)

IIRC, they were in stock last I checked.

I myself am going to use them on my Skywalker's camera pan/tilt unit.
