Zagi update

Postby Riche » Thu May 23, 2013 10:31 am

Hi Guys, This is my first post so would like to say a big hello.

I would like some assistance if possible. I have Zagi or flying wing. I used to fly probably 15 years ago.
It looks like the top picture here with the motor mount/battery thing -> http://www.zagi.com/zagi-electric-wings/zagi-33-hp

I wish to get this back into the sky but need to update the motor including prop and collet /batteries/speed controller/recievier and servos to go with my Spectrum DX6i.

I seem to remember not being to impressed with the performance of the original motor and battery combination.

What do you guys think would be a sensible combinations? .

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Riche,
My choices, may not be "sensible" but a lot of fun:
Turnigy Plush 40A ESC
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... oller.html
Turnigy Typhoon 3550kv (normally used on helos) or anything over 3000kv on 3s
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... lass_.html
Zippy 3s 2200mAh40c
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... P_40C.html
HK15198 9g servos, cheap as chips, from 15 bought only 1 failure
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... 0_09s.html

I have this running in a Skyartec Skyfun and its a bullet, WOT lasts 5min but with a little commonsense flight time can be extended.

I still run a 5x5e, tried a 6x4e but lost some flight time.

I'm not a Spectrum user (or fan) so no comment there.

Oh........I forgot, welcome

Thanks Cynr100 ,

I had a good look on the hobbyking web yesterday afternoon and thats pretty close to what I thought might work.
Then I start looking the AXN and Bruces build vids, it wouldn't cost much more to go for a complete new AXN with Bruces recommendations rather than get the Zagi back in the air.. so think I will probably go for the AXN.

Thanks for your suggestions though.

The AXN is no speed demon but fun to fly, it is more of a powered glider. It will take a lot of damage and is easy to repair, I would recommend the "kit". The stock ESC and servos are rubbish, a Turnigy Plush 25A ESC and the HK15178 servos are more reliable. The stock motor is value for money, robust and reliable. The AXN comes with 5x3e prop but is better suited to a 6x4e.
I am on my 3rd AXN  , the 1st was a waste of my money with no flying experience, the 2nd I really learnt to fly and my current one is a test bed for ideas. At present it has flat wing tips (wet towel and a steam iron removed the "curvy bits") and suffers less from crosswind buffeting, great for soaring, wicked rudder turns and a faster roll rate. It also runs a Turnigy 6x4 wooden prop with no flex under WOT so no thrust loss, a carbon would be better but at a price. I have a spare helo motor, Turnigy 2215 3550kv, to be my next experiment  . That or dual DT750s mounted on the wing leading edges and running slow fly props 8-) .
