Frsky problem.

Problems, experiences or just something to say about RC gear? Say it here.

Martin (MrSneezy) has updated the firmware on his FrSKy 2-way system already and I don't think he had any problems doing so.

he might want to chime in here but I think he used a simple MAX232 level-shifter to interface with the receiver. I'll get FrSky to give us a more thorough explanation of the process perhaps.

There is now *huge* potential to turn a Turnigy 9X with custom software and FrSky module into a very nice system with an 11mS frame-rate -- better than most other module systems and very nearly as good as the Spektrum DX8 in terms of latency.

No, still the V1 software. I'll try the V2 software as soon as I can make up a suitable lead, but if my fault diagnosis is correct (RFI) then I don't think V2 will cure my servo chatter. It'll be fun to find out.

Allan Warner wrote:Pkt, be interested to know if the cheap 'parkfly' servo is still crunchy (coggy) on a different RF link, ie 35mHz FM. The response looks remarkably similar to the 'coggy' response (at moderate stick movement speeds) I had with some servos using the FrSky telemetry units on my Futaba Tx.

Good question, I'll check it out. It'll be a good servo to try with the V2 software too.

"RX must have a RS232 converter installed between the RX module data pins and the PC comm. Port."

Is it enough to make a connector that converts the connector from the FrSky usb cable to a 3-pin connector to use with the Rx?
Or do we need some sort of level converter?

Check out the thread "How to update FrSky receivers" for more details on this, including a link from Mr. Sneezy to a suitable converter board on eBay.
Basically it needs an inverting level shifter to make the connection. RS232 signal levels swing between +ve and -ve voltages (the FrSky USB cable outputs +/-6V for example - other converters give up to +/-12V), but the FrSky Rx only takes logic level signals (0 - 3.3V). Also the Rx needs an inverted signal stream (0->1, 1->0), so the converter also has to invert the RS232 signal.

Ah, i was not aware of that thread, thanks! I did suspect as much, i tore up several old RS232 connected devices yesterday, hunting for a MAX. But i was unawares of the inversion needed. I'll study that thread.
Again, Thanks!

Servo chatter went away for me when I updated. But I have the normal modules, not the diy hack ones
